The Lion is the king of the African wilderness and one of the big five of Africa. Lions are the second largest members of the feline family in the world. They are tan in color and have slightly white under body, with a tuft of black hair at the end of their tails. Lion stand 48 inches high at the shoulder. Adult male lions weigh about 416 pounds, females weigh 277 pounds; Males lions are typically four feet in height with a large mane of hair that begins to develop around age two, that surrounds the neck. The man can vary in color from tawny/tan to black. Females are 44 inches in height, and have no mane around their neck. Cubs are born with a slightly spotted coat that changes to their parents tawny coloration around three months.
This king of the African wilderness is the largest of Africa's predators. Males can weigh up to 230kgs while females are smaller and lighter. Only the male is maned. In very rare cases, unmaned males have been recorded. The mane is usually brown, but black-maned animals also occur as do extremely rare cases of melanistic (black) lions. Rare albinistic specimens, commonly known as the "white lions of Timbavati" also occur in the area.
