Elephants are generally placid, but can be extremely dangerous when the bulls are in mating condition. They live to about seventy years, sometimes even longer, with their life span controlled by their dentition. They have only six pair of molars, with two in use at a time. When all six teeth on each side have been worn away, the elephant is no longer able to chew its food and dies from lack of nutrition.



Contrary to popular belief, elephants do not go off to die in special 'elephant graveyards'. They display a fascination with their dead, and will return to a skeleton and scatter the bones over a wide area. This, combined with the influence of scavengers, results in the absence of intact elephant skeletons, the probable origin of the myth of the elephant graveyards. Due to their large size, adult elephants do not have predators in the normal sense. However, poaching and hunting have taken their toll of this magnificent beast which once roamed the African continent in great number.
